Hi: I wonder if another possibility is that the RAM you have IS 256 MB RAM, but your iMac is only capable of reading 128 MB from each of the sticks. This is a condition I have run into with my Rev/A iMac, and from reading this list I think it has affected some other Rev/A iMacs. I had not heard of it affecting Rev/B iMacs, but one thing you might be able to do is use these sticks in some other compatible Macintosh computer and see if they read 256 in any of them.
Of course, I also realize that some RAM sticks have their capacity printed right on them, and maybe that's what you have discovered a bit too late.
