Try using CD-RW discs instead of regular CD-R discs.

One of my DVD players (Toshiba) that is specifically rated for VCD CDs 
will only play ones I burn to CD-RW. And from what I understand, that is 
fairly common (more so with older DVD players then with newer ones).

My other DVD player (Cyberhome) works fine with CD-R or CD-RW VCDs, so it 
is player specific, however for flexability, I just burn all VCDs to 
CD-RW.
