I read with interest the subject on converting AVI to MPEG, as I am hoping to be able to convert some AVI films to MPEG and then burn VCD (or SVCD) for my children to watch rather than wearing out the VCR...
There's a great DVD player compatibility chart at dvdrhelp.com with user experience on which models support CD-R/W, DVD-R/W, VCD, SVCD... There's a growing number of players that can play MPEGs burned straight to disc without any VCD or DVD authoring, and a couple even support DivX. You can find answers to just about any Mac video encoding or burning question by searching the dvdrhelp.com Mac forum.
Converting avi files to mpeg isn't a problem. The problem is burning vcd. If
you have a 650 meg mpeg, converting to vcd in toast makes it to big for a
700 meg cd. Maybe someone on the list has info on a compression program.
If the files are compressed, they won't be VCD-compatible anymore. VCDs need adhere to exact video/audio bitrates (1150 kbps/224 kbps), so the size of the VCD-ready MPEG will always depend upon the length of the video (about 10 MB for each minute of video). The file size is misleading: It sounds impossible, but an 80 minute, 800 MB movie WILL fit onto an 80 minute, 700 MB CD-R.
Toast is easy to use, but many freeware apps (ffmpegX, VCDToolsX, MMT-EZ, MissingMediaBurner, dozens more) give the user a lot more control over the whole process. Search for VCD or MPEG at versiontracker or macupdate to check them out.
