When I tried out - and didn't like - OS X 10.1 I just booted in OS 9 and dragged all the OS X-related folders (Applications, Library, System, Users) to the bin.
Well, FWIW, in deleting those OS X folders, you had removed the visible parts of OS X, but X includes a large number of invisible files, which would have remained. (That's why it is said that erasing the X volume is the only way to completely remove X. Unless you want to go on a fairly demanding hunt for "invisibles".)
Worked just fine. OS 9 continued to run, problem free.
Yep, makes sense, the invisible remains of OS X would not interfere with OS 9 operation.
