Chris, Try restarting while holding down the shift key. Once started with extensions off, open the extension manager and turn off every thing you do not need to start the computer. Restart with the minimal extension set, in fact, there may be a Apple basic set pre-built. Use it. Check your cd-rom extensions and make sure they are all there and turned on. Restart. You might get the CD-ROM to get recognized. I had similar start up problem. This method worked for me on my iMac 233. TJ
