I again am thinking about what the best , best being safest and easiest , way to clean all the dust out of the machine.

I have a little bit of experience in this area, having helped out MUG refurbish a a hundred or more older Macs for purposes of redonating them into the community.

Working indoors, often in cooler weather, we first tried using a vacumn cleaner to clean the insides of computers. This was mainly to try to control the spread of the dust and dust-bunnies. But that didn't really work out so well. Had a hard time really getting into all the nooks and grannies, plus we worried about static electricity build up.

So we moved on to blowing instead of sucking. When dealing with multiple computers, this pretty much necessitates getting outdoors with the main components so we either did this in the warmer seasons or bundled up. The best quality job we felt comes from using the commercially available cans of compressed gas. It may just be compressed air, but I think it's someone more than just that. Computer stores and office supply stores seems to carry products from Kensington and others that will do the job. One can will do one really dirty computer or sometimes two moderately dusty computers. The cans come with a little plastic straw affair which lets you get the airflow into the tight nooks and crannies.

The problem with this approach is the cost of the cans of gas. Up here, in Canadian dollars, we are looking at over $10.00 a can. No real problem if you are just wanting to clear your own one computer, but a hassle when you have a hundred to do and are planning to then just donate them to another party.

So I do have an electric air compressor than I bought on eBay over the winter and which I plan to fire up when the spring finally gets here as part of my program to gain back control of my basement by refurbishing and clearing out about twenty or more old Macs I have done there in various states of disrepair. I generally find that you don't really need to BLAST away in tight spots but just hold the blower back a couple of feet and most of the dust will be taken care of that way.

Good luck!!
