As you've found, USB burners aren't exactly an ideal solution for you (or
anyone really.)
If you have any mechanical skills at all I'd suggest buying a slim
(laptop) CD-RW mechanism and installing it internally. It's an easy job
and with instructions it's a doddle. :-)
For starters, here's an Apple page showing how to open an original iMac:
<http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&q=50032>
and here's a Google search for more takeaparts, etc.:

The faceplate won't match but unless appearance is paramount it's easy to
live with a slightly non-standard look. In any case, I think you'll be
much happier with an internal drive: you won't have to deal with USB and
the external box, plus an internal drive will be _much_ faster both
burning and reading. As an added bonus, the cost will be lower too. :-)
Most any laptop CD-RW will work, but it's probably best to find one
supported by both MacOS burn support and Toast. For some very helpful
infos:

>Also is there a reputable vendor that I could buy one from other than e-bay?
As for a source, eBay remains the best place to find such stuff. Purchase
from a vendor who's been around for awhile and has lots of positive
feedback and you're very unlikely to go wrong.
