Its really a matter of personal preference. I've got
a Bondi that I put a 333 daughterboard in so that
makes it kind of a rev D and Panther runs acceptably
on it. It runs quicker than Jaguar did, but if you
are doing a side by side comparison from 8.6 to
Panther, 8.6 is going to win as far as window
scrolling and opening and things like that.

Once you are in the programs though Panther wins
because you can use all the cool apps that are only
for X like Safari, the iApps, Mail and have all of
them open at the same time and not worry about
crashing.

I'd been X only for a while now until I picked up a
PB3400 then I had to go back to 8.5 through 9.2.2
until I settled on 9.1 for it. I'd forgotten that
dealing with application freezes and crashes and
having to force a reboot every so often is just a
normal part of the day with pre OS X OS's. I still
like my 3400 and I remembered all the little tricks to
minimize problems but Panther is by far a better way
of life.

Just my two cents.... your mileage may vary.

Oh though if you are going to put Panther on there go
ahead and put 512 Megs of RAM in it and pop a 7200 RPM
drive in there, you'll be glad you did.
