The 233, 266 and 333 MHz iMacs ,revisions A-D otherwise known as 'CD
tray loading' models, can all run Mac OS X, but realistically you need
to have at least a 350MHZ model, since these came with faster 100MHz
memory, whereas your model and the other tray loaders the memory runs
at the slower 66MHz. You have already upgraded the Video RAM from the
standard 2MB to 6Mb, so you will get bigger resolutions. 256Mb of RAM
should be considered the bare mimimum when running Panther. I have seen
iMac 350's running Panther OK, but this was only for Web browsing and
writing letters, etc. With Mac OS X the more RAM you have the better!

I also have a friend looking to upgrade her 266MHz iMac to 256Mb RAM as
she wants to run Panther too, so I'll see how she gets on.

For best performance, I was advised to upgrade my processor, so I did
with a NewerTech iMAX Powr 466MHz card. I still need to upgrade the RAM
from 160MB to either 384MB like yourself, or 512Mb (Max our iMacs can
take). I too will be moving across to Mac OS X in the next few weeks, so
I'll let you know how I get on!

Alternatively, instead of buying an accelerator card like I did, it may
work out cheaper to get another second hand iMac, at least a 350MHz
model (preferably with FireWire), or faster! You can also put more RAM
into the later iMacs (1GB) plus it will be the faster 100MHz. The first
350MHz iMac did not have FireWire, but the later versions did!

Subject: Panther on a Rev c iMac?

Hi there.

How well would MacOS 10.3 run on my Rev c iMac (the fruit coloured
266MHz G3, Rage Pro 6MB VRAM model)? Acceptably fast? Much slower than
8.6 which I currently run?

I'm shortly going to be upgrading my RAM to 384MB from 160MB and will
swap my 6GB HD for a much larger size. I'll put the old one in a USB
enclosure for external use. As a result I'm wondering if a system
upgrade is in order as well. Overlooking any compatibility issues with
my older software (which anyone would face, anyway), which should I move
up to - MacOS 9 or 10.3? Or should I simply stay with 8.6 (though it's
low limit on the number of open files has been annoying me)?

I'd like to be able to use Safari and Apple's Mail or Bare Bones
Software's MailSmith and have as many files open as I like, but not if
it's going to be painfully slow. I can live with a little speed
reduction, but not excessively so.

Regards,
 Jamie Kahn Genet
