Why is it that most of the USB devices available are fully compatable with
almost every USB-version of Windoze, but require System 9.0 or higher (for
example)? Is it due to the laziness of the manufacturers?

Here's what started all this:
The modem in my sister's Rev B iMac died (System 8.5.1). I told her to get
a USB modem; she picked up a BestData USB modem. It works on all Windoze
machines, but only on System 9.0 or higher Macs. What gives? Why can't
these manufacturers provide USB drivers for their equipment (or design USB
devices that are compliant with the System 8.1 USB specifiactions [I can't
remember the USB version number that ships with System 8.1])? I even
upgraded her iMac with the latest USB drivers from Apple's site (via LEM).
In the end, she had to upgrade to System 9.0.4.

Chris, have you looked at USB Overdrive? It works with USB hardware that don't have Mac specific drivers?
