The G3 iMac can still hold its own, depending upon what you are using it for. I also dual boot Mac OS 9.1 and Yellow Dog Linux (YDL), but intend to upgrade to Mac OS X as soon as I have boosted the RAM to 512MB. I'm looking to get a G4 tower soon, but will still use my iMac and won't trade it in!
As for Yellow Dog Linux, it is worth considering if you want a Unix based OS, but can't afford or justify forking out for Panther (Panther costs AUS$229, yet I can get an iMac 350MHz for $375!). Yellow Dog will also run on lower spec macs like your pre-G3 PPC series processors, although it may be a little slow.
