What is this "family pack" you speak of regarding Panther? Is that a bit
like a site licence that grants say 5 users to install software on their
machines from the one set of disks?

Why is Mac OS X so expensive? It costs AUS $230 which is $50 more than
Windows XP. If it is based on BSD Unix, how can Apple justify this huge
price hike, when BSD is free under the GNU Licence? IT really does act
as a disincentive to go Mac. Also fast PC's (2.4GHz entry level) are
less than half the price of an entry level iMac (AUS $2300). The main
obstacle I encounter is that people can get a brand new PC for the price
of a second hand iMac 450. I can't help but think that Apple have got to
drop the price if they are serious about making inroads into the desktop
war.

Back to Panther, I will have at least 2 Macs (already have a damaged
iMac, but am getting aG4 tower to compelement it), but the iMac will go
to another member of the family living in another state, so would I be
better off getting the Family Pack or 2 copies of Panther?

Thanks In Advance
Pete

The license on OS X makes this clear: you are allowed to install it on
only one machine.

I might suggest that you ask Apple about upgrading your Panther to the
"family pack," which is a license for Panther (no need for new discs)
to be installed on up to five machines and costs about the same as two
copies. I imagine that they would let you "upgrade" to this for just
the difference between what you paid for Panther already and what the
cost is, though I could be wrong about that.

Apple does not employ "activation" or other tricks to physically
prevent you from installing Panther on both machines, but it *is*
illegal and acts as a disincentive to Apple to offer reasonable pricing
on their OS.
