What is this "family pack" you speak of regarding Panther?

I am in Canada, and have to admit that when Panther was first introduced I went to the Apple Canada Online Store to order a copy and slipped through the entire ordering process without seeing that there were TWO versions of Panther that one could order, the single user license and the "family pack" 5-user version. This was because Panther was being promoted right on the front page of the Store site but if you followed those links you got the single user version. If you instead first navigated to the Apple Software section, you more easily saw that there was more than one way to buy the Apple OS.

I have at least three Macs in my home that are running OS X, soon to be four, so the Family Pack makes sense to me, at least as an alternative to buying multiple copies of the single-user version.

I have no idea whether Apple uses ANY techniques to attempt to enforce the user license limits. I am not interested in trying to break the rules.

With regard to the cost of the Apple OS, I personally don't find it exorbitant given the amount of features that are included. By "features" I mean not only what the core OS will do but also the inclusion of various actual applications like Safari, Mail, iChat, iCal, etc., etc. I have not done a feature by feature comparison between OS X and Windows XP because, quite simply, I have no interest whatsoever in moving toward Windows. I get to live in the Windows world all day at work!

BMW has no illusions about ever becoming the General Motors or Toyota of the automotive world. All analogies are flawed, but I feel that comparing Apple to BMW is not a bad way to think of things. Nobody NEEDS a BMW, but the folks at BMW make a nice living serving the WANTS of a discriminating market, and if you look closely you'll see that in recent years BMW has made moves to compete in the lower cost segments of the discriminating marketplace. And, hey, I have worked all my life for General Motors!!
