My pupil is in trouble. Starting her on a iMac DV SE slotloading
machine running OS X v. 10.3.3 all went well for two days. This
morning
the machine refused to start up. Chimes yes but thereafter just a
small
white square with a blue ball in the center. Never seen something like
that. Also no further start up. Tried to start in Safe Mode but no
change. Any other way to clear this, except starting from a bootable
CD? And what could have gone wrong so that it can be avoided in the
future.
I would boot off the Panther cd1 and go to disk utilities and repair preferences. If that doesn't help, then reinstall Panther.

Well the problem was short lived. My pupil rang me this morning and shouted: The Mac is a wonder! I pushed 81 keys and now the machine works.
I can't explain but seen it with my own eyes.

Have to eat my own words. Today when I visited my pupil the same thing happened again. Start up 'boing', white square with a blue Globe in the middle and after a long wait the file with the blinking question mark, which again takes some time and finally the Apple appears and start up is finalized. My estimate is the the whole procedure takes at least four times longer than a normal start up.
DW does not clear the problem. I had to reinstall OS X v.10.3 and all was well except though Mail is working it won't initiate links in e-mails. Safari will open but home page won't open and bookmarks won't open either. What can I do, and what is that Globe I never seen before?
