I had a similar problem with my iMac. The AV board had to be replaced and has worked fine ever since.

I have just been given a dead iMac and I want to see if this thing is worth fixing. It's a basic blueberry 350 MHz slot-load unit from 2000. The previous owner got a quote for $300 to replace some board, although she didn't know specifically which board it was, and didn't include the service quote with the computer. Since the machine was a business expense and now fully depreciated she bought an iBook instead of repairing this unit and gave this lump to me. The main symptom is that, when the power button is pressed, the machine appears to start (the power light comes on, I hear the startup chime, and the drive spools up) but then shuts down a few seconds later. I never see anything on the monitor. Is this a problem with the main logic board or the analog board? The symptoms don't match anything I've dealt with on rev. A-D machines (those have mostly been dead analog boards), so I could use some advice here.
I bought the type of iMac that you describe, with a severe display problem, which I thought from the description could be fixed with zapping the PRAM. At first I overdid it and the machine wound up with the symptoms you describe. The power button light would come on stay yellow for a while then flash in and out of yellow to green and the machine would not come on. I tried everything people suggested and it wouldn't come on. Finally, I opened it up, and inside is something called a reset (cuda) switch. Following an Apple tech's directions, I pressed that switch ONE TIME ONLY... and magically got the machine to start up. In addition the very bad green and distorted display turned into a beautiful, like-new machine's image. There might be hope for you without having to buy anything. You need a lot of patience and some instructions on getting to and using the cuda switch. Contact me off list if you can't put your hands on the info. I can possibly copy it for you.
