On a related note, if it is the main logic board that needs to be
replaced, is it possible (and relatively easy) to swap in a board from
a later DV model and get the FireWire connections and extra processor
speed? I know that I would have to cut out the opening for the
external video connector - are there any other modifications that
would be necessary?
Yes it's possible. Instead of cutting out the ports just swap the I/O
cover. Even a brand new one from Apple parts is not expensive. It's the
firewire mother board that's the spendy part.

I would expect a replacement logic board to come with the I/O cover, but this isn't exactly what I was referring to. I was concerned about the external VGA monitor connection on the back of the board; the basic 350 MHz model doesn't have this feature, but I believe that the DV units do provide this connector. The RF shield would need to be modified to accommodate this port.
