A friend has an eMac which allows him to run in Classic mode but does NOT permit him to boot up in OS 9. This eMac came with a number of Apple printer drivers already included in the Chooser under OS 9, but it of course does NOT have a driver there for his Epson Stylus printer.
Come tax time, he did his taxes using a Canadian version of QuickTax which is not OS X native. It works fine in Classic mode, but the problem is that he cannot print out his forms to his Epson printer because he has no printer driver available to him within Classic mode.
The CD which came from Epson worked fine for installing printer drivers for OS X, but he has been unable to use this CD to create an OS 9 Epson driver in Extensions folder of his OS 9 System. The Epson files are provided in the form of installer applications, not as a simple drag and drop printer driver file.
My friend has contacted Apple Canada who tell him there is no solution. They suggested he move his stuff over to his old OS 9 iMac that his wife now uses, but the problem there is that it has insufficient RAM to allow him to launch QuickTax there.
He has also contacted QuickTax and Epson, but all that has gotten him is assurances that next year's QuickTax will be OS X native.
I frankly find it strange that it would be so difficult to add an Epson driver to the Extensions folder of his OS 9 System Folder, and wondered if anyone has solved this kind of issue before. As matters stand now, I intend to loan my friend a portable printer like a StyleWriter, for which there IS a driver in his OS 9 System Folder, once I figure out how to attach a StyleWriter to an eMac!!
