Thank you, John and Adam, for your encouragement
to try using both chips. That's what I had been thinking,
but I'm glad to know that those who are more experienced
than I think it will work. And Ken, thanks for the laugh! Sorry
I bid over a fellow lister on ebay. It really was a good deal!
Hope you find one of your own.
Lauren

I'm fairly certain that the RAM in your iMac will run at 100 MHz ONLY.

PC100 is a perfect fit.

PC133 will run at 133 MHz in other computers, but in your iMac it will only
run at 100 MHz.

Different RAM does not run at different speeds in your computer, it either
runs at 100 MHz (PC100 or 133) or it doesn't run at all (anything slower
than PC100.)

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I have been on this list for many years and I
have NEVER heard of different RAM speed having an effect on the speed of
the computer, or of people upgrading to faster RAM to get increased
performance.

I'm sure someone will politely correct me if I'm wrong.

Perhaps your potential buyer was trying to tell you that that fast RAM was
going to waste running 33 MHz slower than it was rated for in your iMac, and
THAT was why he should have it?

It could also be that he is more knowledgeable about PCs than Macs. I
believe that in the PC world things sometimes DO work the way he said.

Hi Lauren,

You'll be fine with the RAM you've bought. Even if you had two sticks
running at PC133 speeds, your iMac would only run them at PC100 speed. So,
I'd ignore your unsolicited email, if I was you and enjoy speed bump.

Adam

Lauren you sneak.... That was me you were bidding against..... :-P

You are good at ebay! Nice job.

I, on the other hand, have to keep looking for more chips.

Back on line tonight.

Subject: Mixing ram of different speeds
From: Lauren Sauve <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi, I just bought some used ram on ebay to upgrade
a 500 Mhz SE iMac. The guy had it in his 400 Mhz iMac.
I bought both his Apacer 256 MB pc100 chip and a NCP 512
MB pc133 chip. Then I got an email from somebody who told me
that I should not mix these two speeds,as the slower one
will keep the faster one from running at top speed and who thenoffered
to buy one of the chips off of me. Is this guy correct? Is it bad to
mix ram speeds?
I presently have 2- 128 chips, but I don't know their speed. What do
you experts suggest I do? I was planning on using both the
512 and the 256, and selling or holding onto the 2- 128s. Thanks.
Lauren
