I've been running a 7200 rpm 120 gig drive constantly for months now, with 
no problems at all... I use my 1999 era iMac as a server with the built-in 
Apache setup.

My new drive has liquid bearings which keep friction to a minimum. Startup 
is much quicker. And, of course, I have over 110 gigs more than before.

I'm getting more value, and extending the life of my old Mac -- a better 
alternative at this time than shelling out $1000-plus for a new computer.

Thanks for this useful link. I note that the article recommends using a 
5400 rpm drive, and adds "faster drives may be too hot for iMacs". Does 
this match listers' experience? I'm pretty sure people have said here that 
they have used 7200 rpm drives in CRT iMacs.
