Miche I have 233 Rev A iMac and replaced the 4G WD drive with a 20GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm drive, and have not encountered any problems. There is a slight speed increase in disk accessing. I don't get the full benefit of the ATA66 capabilities of the Seagate, since it drops its burst rate speed to suit the slower plain ATA iMac IDE spec.
You could also consider getting a Sonnet Harmoni, Power Logic, NewerTech iMAX Powr etc, as the speed upgrade really helps, especially as more and more mac software seems to require faster processors, more RAM etc. Thanks to folk here, Eddie, Charles, Mary, et al, I've learned shed loads of new things I can do with my 'obselete' iMac! I got a PPC 6100 last year from an author/publisher who had used it day in day out for the last 10 years, so I hope to get the same out of my iMac! I note that the article recommends using a 5400 rpm drive, and adds "faster drives may be too hot for iMacs". Does this match listers' experience? I'm pretty sure people have said here that they have used 7200 rpm drives in CRT iMacs. Miche. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
