From: Miche Doherty <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks for this useful link. I note that the article recommends using a 5400 rpm drive, and adds "faster drives may be too hot for iMacs". Does this match listers' experience? I'm pretty sure people have said here that they have used 7200 rpm drives in CRT iMacs.
That advice is obsolete. Today's smoother-running drives actually run COOLER than the original 5400rpm drives. When I put a WD 8MB cache 7200rpm 120GB in my fanless G3 iMac, the average temperature (and noise level) actually went DOWN several degrees.
I do recommend looking for a drive with an 8MB cache, as I believe that really makes a difference in terms of responsiveness of the drive. In a fanless Mac, I'd also suggest researching to find the *quietest* drive you can.
