I have an airport extreme card in my G5, hubby, about 25 feet and a wall away, has an airport card in his clamshell mac running 9.2.2 Yet, even with the short distance, we can't seem to get enough of a signal for him to wirelessly connect. Do I need one of the "extender" antennaes? What could I be doing wrong? We've checked the signal strength, and it's great, until he goes into the next room, where it drops off like a rock! The only thing between the rooms are 2 closets with the usual metal fixtures inside. Ideas??
A surprising number of houses have "wire mesh" (chicken wire) inside the walls of their home. This acts as a RF blocking grid and really kills Airport reception. I've noticed that large metal closet doors often have the same effect, so that may be what's doing you in.
The workaround probably involves a line-of-sight antenna extender. We had to do that for a client who had wire-mesh in her walls: we put the extender in the hallway, where the signal goes PAST the wall and now provides her with access throughout the rest of the house.
