The dIfference between AIrport and AIrport extreme Is that one uses "802.11b" thIs Is 11Mpbs, thIs Is "AIrport". "AIrport Extreme" Is "802.11g" thIs Is 54Mbps.
Both are Inter-compatIble, an 802.11b computer can use an 802.11g access poInt (or "base statIon") and 802.11g computers can use an 802.11b access poInt. But remember, the strength of the chaIn depends on the strength of the weakest loop. So basIcally, don't expect to get 54Mbps out of an 802.11b unIt even If the rest Is 802.11g.
As far as what It says on Apples sIte, thats all true, It really Is very sImple, you may get sIgnal problems dependIng on the contents of your walls and or the dIstance between the computers but that Is your personal cIrcumstance and I don't thInk there Is any way of tellIng before-hand. My sIsters room Is at the other end of the house wIth many walls and a boIler In the way, she gets an excellent sIgnal. *shrug*
SomethIng else Is that you don't HAVE to have an access poInt, you can create a computer-to-computer WIFI network. There Is an optIon to do that In the "AIrport" menu near the clock In OS X, I know It can be done In OS 9.x.x but I can't say how.
