Here is ultimately what I would like to do:
1. Connect WiFi with my Palm Tungsten C
2. Connect WiFi with friends/relatives that arrive on occasion with some really cool stuff
3 Eventually, connnect my daughter's Dell to the WiFi network (if I don't buy her a powerbook first!)

What you need depends on what you want to do and how many computers you have.
If you only have one computer, the usual setup would be an Airport Base
Station (or similar wireless router made by another company) connected to
your cable/DSL internet connection, and an Airport card in your Mac.
If you have more than one computer, you can still use the Airport Base
Station, OR if one of your computers is always turned on and conveniently
located you can plug that computer straight into your internet connection,
and use that computer as a wireless router, this is usually called a
"Software base Station".
