Not sure if this option is still available but my Via Voice X came with a pretty hairy headset/mic setup right in the box. I think the total was around $99 or $129 after a rebate offer. If the disks-only deal was not a lot better then maybe a return to seller is in order.
The comment about the mic sensitivity rings true to me, although I do not have any tech background to back this up. I found that if you train it with the dishwasher running in the room, it will "expect" the dishwasher to always be there. A clean well-lighted place is a good idea. A few bucks spent up front on the disks and mic will be repaid with zero hassles and a quick ramp up to amzingly speedy document creation. Just my opinion - not sure if it has value!
