I had a sony sepressa USB CDRW drive and I had HUGE problems getting it 
to write reliably in OS X. From what I found, it was really the USB 
adaptor that was the problem (it would hang OS X when you tried to start 
something like Toast). Reading from the drive was always fine.

I'm assuming you are not using a specific Sony USB drive since you said 
you added the drive to a USB case. So your probably may not be the same 
problem I saw.

I can tell you however, that the USB on that iMac (USB 1.0) tops out at 
4x writing (you can sometimes push 6x if you don't do anything else that 
might suck up USB bandwidth). So if you are trying to write at your 40x 
speed over USB, it will definitly fail. If you want that kind of speed, 
you need to go with firewire.
