I apologise if I'm coming over strident -- I'm trying to be kind. The problem of OS 9's obsolescence is going to get worse, and worse, and worse over the next few years. I shout about it (sort of) in the same way I'd shout about making backups BEFORE you get caught with a failure. I have regular crashes using PayPal with Safari, I gave up and now do all my finances through Camino 0.8 instead.
I don't know what could be causing that (a Safari "enhancement" that's been known to cause problems springs to mind, however), but I assure you that Paypal works just fine with Safari, at least in Panther. I've had to use my Paypal account a lot lately because I'm in a buying spree on Ebay of late. No problems whatsoever.
At the very, very least, your friend should upgrade to 9.1 if not 9.2.2 -- it's free (I believe) and might possibly solve his problem for a while at least (I assume he's already updated to the last version of IE for Mac -- if so, also give Netscape or WamCom's version of Mozilla 1.3 a try).
That much I will go with. If you have a New World machine running OS 9 then there's no excuse for not running 9.2.2. It's better, faster and more compatible than 9.1.
