Don't get excited.

And don't panic.

If it were MY iMac I would hope that the problem is simple, and unplug
the white 4-wire power cable and the communication ribbon cables from
the back of the suspected drive and then plug them right back in.

It sounds like you have simply lost power or awareness to the device.

An external USB CD-ROM drive or CD-ROM RW will be one cheap solution.
eBay has them by the score.

If you have access to other Mac users borrow a USB external CD-ROM
reader or writer and see if it gets seen. What I mean is, see if the
disk shows up on the Desktop to verify that your software is OK.

I don't know if you have FireWire but if you do connect a FireWire DC
burner.

Or connect a FireWire external hard drive and boot off a different
system to see if it sees the CD-ROM drive.

Sometimes (and this works for me more often than I care to admit) what
you need to do is try the Allen-Bradley Reset.

Turn off the computer and let it cool down completely. Then turn it back
on. If your iMac is dense enable Speech Recognition. Set out a
caprenters claw-hammer and an assortment of large screw-drivers,
slip-joint pliers and a knife and fork. Put them in front of the screen.
Say loudly, "Well I don't know very much about how this thing operates
but I guess its time to crack it open and find out. I wonder if I should
just restart it one last time to make sure there's a serious problem..."

Then you shut it down and give it a bit of time to contemplate the
errors of its ways. Contrition should set in almost instantly.

Restart.

Be seen holding a small pry-bar or bread knife in plain view in front of
the computer screen when it starts up again. See if your CD-ROM has come
back to life. This is also known as the Lazarus Effect or the Phoenix
Gambit.

Good luck.
