I have a 20 GB hard drive partitioned with 5.9 GB (useable) for system software/ applications and 12.7 GB (usaeble) for data. I got my Mac one year old in nearly new condition already configured this way and have never changed it. It has OSX 10.2.8 and OS 9.2.2 and with Apps has only 1 GB of space left.

1. Is it possible repartition in OSX without having to reinitialize the HD and reinstalling OS and Apps? AND not lose anything!

Dude, have you ever heard of backups?

To answer your question, there is a product or two that claims to do what you ask -- but (ironically) they are OS X only.

The solution for you is to buy an external FW hard drive, backup your current drive to it using CCC or something like it, then erase and repartition your original HD and clone the stuff back to it. Then, use said drive for regular backups.

2. Are there any bloated largly unnessesary elements or files in OSX I can delete to make room?

Yes, there are extra language files which most users don't require. I used MonoLingual to get rid of em on my system, but I would **STRONGLY** caution anyone thinking of doing this to have a FULL, BOOTABLE backup prior to attempting it. One false move and you will accidentally erase your English language files as well, causing the OS X to become virtually unusable. Lucky thing I had a backup!! I figured out what I did wrong (hint: US is not the same as "English") and the second attempt went perfectly.

For example Receipts file which appears to be duplicates of all my software downloads and the Printer file seems to have unneeded items.

Do NOT mess with the Receipts folder. You'll regret it.

After all, if I change or add a printer later can't I install the needed software at that time?

Removing old printer files is PROBABLY a safe move, but you won't see any hugely noticeable space savings.

In OS 9 I knew what everything was but OSX is still too new to me to start
trashing items.

Short guide: avoid trashing ANYTHING not located in your User folder unless you're certain of what you're doing. Don't even THINK about trashing non-User stuff unless you have a full, bootable backup handy.
