I am wanting to upgrade my Imac that now has OS 9.2. I had already settled
on the 17" Imac, but now I'm hearing that Apple has discontinued that model
and a new one is coming out in September. Does anybody know anything about
the new one? Is there any advantage to waiting for it? Any idea on the cost?
Notice: the following does NOT contain any rumours or idle speculation.
Yes, it is true that Apple has discontinued the entire current iMac line, though you can still get them (though you'll probably have to hunt around). There was a supply problem which has caused Apple to have to discontinue the current iMac line while delaying they new, completely redesigned iMac line till September. Apple had hoped to have the new, G5-based iMacs ready by now, but issues with IBM's fabricating plant and the specific model of G5 chip being used caused the delay.
The "advantage" of waiting is simply that the new iMac will use the G5 chip, which presumably will make it considerably faster than the current models. OTOH, you could be enjoying a lot of fun computing right now rather than having to wait until September, so whether that advantage is big enough to alter your plans depends on your needs. For basic, simple consumer computing (by which I mean email, web surfing, light gaming, home finance/Office type stuff), is there REALLY any big difference between a G4 and a G5? Not really, no.
There's been no information on pricing of the new iMacs. Apple traditionally does not like to raise prices, so one can hope that the price points will stay the same, but there's no way to know till the things are formally announced.
