Also which iMac does your mother have exactly, because IIRC the first four revision iMacs up to 333Mhz had two seperate IDE busses where the HD and CD both were master on their own bus. With these iMacs you can use single-drive installation. Newer iMacs only have one bus so that the CD is slaved to the HD.
