It's been mentioned before, but I'd like to repeat, I think maybe yer next step is to try the CUDA reset. Its a little, raised, coloured (red, black, white?) cylindrical button on the logic board. Needs to be depressed for 5 seconds or so, once. (Power off the iMac, but leave it plugged in for this.)
Also, it would be helpful to know what model of iMac. So, MHz? Colour? The 8 Gig partition thing applies to OS X on models at 333 MHz or lower.
And no, all other things being equal, there is no heat problem with 7200 RPM drives in iMacs.
And finally, I see you have installed OS 8.5? There's a free update to 8.6 available from Apple's site. Recommended.
