For future reference, I recommend Conflict Catcher for systems like your wife's, i..e prior to OS X. With it, you can install it in her original System, then install a new Clean System Folder and install Conflict Catcher there also. THEN, you can let Conflict Catcher figure out all the files that are in the Old System Folder but not in the new System Folder and you can either do a one click to have CC move them all or you can go through them one at a time making judgment calls whether or not you want to move them. It really saves a LOT of time compared to the old manual methods. This is a special feature of Conflict Catcher called System Merge which really has nothing whatsoever to do with CC's real purpose.
Also, I wondered if the problem with the Epson was that you were trying to install OS X drivers on an older OS.
Anyway, like I said, I've been there and know how it feels.
