For future reference, I recommend Conflict Catcher for systems like your wife's, i..e prior to OS X.

Also, I wondered if the problem with the Epson was that you were trying to install OS X drivers on an older OS.
No, the CD-ROM says OS 7.x - 9.x, as well as OS X and Windows. On the Epson site I specifically selected the OS 7.x - 9.x installer download. My wife's iMac froze every time I tried to install.
Anyway, like I said, I've been there and know how it feels.

Well, us Mac people have to stick together. In 5 years, I've never had my iMac in the shop, not once. I've learned to fix, (and UNfix) everything myself so far! With help from people like you online.
