Hello, people
This is a question on a very related subject I ave been offered an ACER CDRW unit 4x4x6, but using Sytems 9.2.2. I am kind of puzzled:
Disks do not appear on the desk top, CD burning software do not see it, yet it shows up in Apple system profile
Do I need a driver for it? Am I doing something wrong?

I am looking for a CD-writer for my iMac. It has a built-in DVD-player, USB and Firewire. If you have information on it (make, model, availability) I would appreciate it.
Check dealmac.com, which FREQUENTLY has good prices on an external Firewire CD burner. Do *not* get a USB 2.0 only burner, you can't use it.
Then, buy a copy of Toast 6. Again, check froogle.com or dealmac.com for the best prices.
I actually just bought a 52x IDE burner from the local OfficeMax (doesn't matter what brand, as I'll explain) for $20 (after rebate) and dropped it into a 5.25" FW external case I happened to have lying around (these things cost $40-60 bucks most places).
Naturally, OS X saw it right away, but I found that I needed a freeware program called "Patchburn II" (available via macupdate.com or versiontracker.com) to get iTunes, iPhoto et al to see it. Toast saw it automatically.
I can't burn to it *directly* from the finder, but can burn from any other program that "sees" burners.
