Yes,
it now "sees" it but does not
recognize it as capable of writing

Any help or suggestion of a particular procedure or
software  would be greatly appreciated

I ave been offered an ACER CDRW unit  4x4x6,
but using Sytems 9.2.2.  I am kind of puzzled:

Disks do not appear on the desk top, CD burning software do not see it,
yet it shows up in Apple system profile

Do I need a driver for it?
Am I doing something wrong?

What CD Burning software are you using? Are you using Toast?
