I've been looking at the "Flat Panel" iMacs (with the basketball base).
I seem to recall that these models didn't have a cooling fan relying on clever convection to keep the processor cool.
Is this correct or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Yes Andrew your memory is playing tricks on you. The Flat Panel (LCD) iMac G4 has a vertical blower that blows out around the base of the screen neck. It's variable speed and very quite, I barely notice mine (G4/800 iMac 15")

It's the slot-loading CRT iMacs which are fanless.

I thought all the G3 iMacs were fanless.
