3. If you want to stick with dial-up, and have more than one computer, you
can get a router with a modem port, and all your computers can share a
single modem.  The iMac would connect to the router through its Ethernet
port.

4. If you really want to go all out, you could put an Airport wireless card
in the iMac, and get an Airport base station with a built in modem.

But, I think that maybe you CAN replace the internal modem.  There's one up
on eBay right now that says it's "FOR USE IN THE 350 / 400 DV & 400 DV
SPECIAL EDITION":
