OK - I have cured this one.

Remove all traces of iSync, iCal, iSync Palm Conduit as follows:-

To remove iSync
        Delete "iSync*" from /Library/Receipts/
Delete the iSync application from /Applications/
        Delete "com.apple.isync.*" from ~Library/Preferences/
        Delete ~/Library/Application Support/SyncService/
        Delete /Library/Application Support/SyncService/
        Delete /Library/Receipts/iSync_Palm.pkg
        Delete /Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits/Apple

plus for iCal
        Delete "iCal*" from /Library/Receipts/
Delete the iCal application from /Applications/
        Delete "com.apple.ical.*" from ~Library/Preferences/
        Delete ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.ical/
        Delete /Library/Application Support/ical/

Download the latest version of Palm Desktop (4.2.1) from PalmSource and install this. Then install ical, iSync Palm Conduit, and iSync. Run HotSync manager and enable the iSync Conduit and then run iSync.

Worked like a charm. Just goes to show you need to check for the latest versions of EVERYTHING when trying to fix a problem.

Hope this helps someone, and thanks to Dennis for pointing me to the Palm website, which set me on the right trail.

I have had many problems with iSync and so "started again". I trashed
all evidence of iSync, iSync palm Conduit and iCal and installed from
scratch.

First time all contacts got to the Mac from the Palm, but then it
hung.
Had to force quit iSync, and log in again to clear iSync. Once I
had
deleted and reinstalled all three apps again, I tried to run iSync. I
told iSync to just sync Calendar from the Palm. All runs fine, but
then fails with an iSync error of (Null) (Null).

The iSync log shows Getting all Calendar and ToDos from the Palm, and
show the changes being applied to the Backup Log. The last entry in
the log is "Applying Changes to iCal".

This seems like an iCal problem, but I cannot get rid of it however I
try.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Jim
