The iMac could not pivot 90 degrees because the cooling system depends on
air flow that will be determined in part by where the heat-producing parts
are. It is far more complicated than a monitor.

Many hard drives these days work in more than one position; in any event, if
rotated such that it remains in the same plane (which is what would happen
when rotating the iMac from Vertical to a horizontal screen), there would be
very little or no effect on the drive. So the hard drive could be placed
where rotating it would not be a big problem, but the other issues will
remain.
