What was required was that the 120 gig WD drive be FORMATTED. I did that 
and all went well. When the WD drive was in the FireWire case all by
itself it was jumpered as Single.

When I put it into the iMac I jumpered it as Master because it shared
cable with the DVD-ROM drive which is jumpered as the Slave. This was
wrong. I restored it to Single in the iMac.

Once I pulled the jumper and formatted the WD it works perfectly.

I got advice about installing big ATA hard drives into iMacs from a more
knowlegeable iMac user on the Discussions forum on the Apple Support
website joining in on an on-going thread started by someone who put a
160-gig drive into his iMac..
