O.K. Before I get a bunch of hate mail, I'm not really anti-OS X.
Several of our newer Macs at my former job run it. (Yes, the usual
gliches). My real point was, there are oodles of people out there
using Macs (including iMacs) that are on OS 9 & older, and aren't
going to upgrade.

Well, eventually they will have to, but I think your point -- that they don't want to or can't right now -- is valid in some cases. And I reiterate that in certain situations that's the sensible thing to do (hold off upgrading).

In MOST typical computing situations, however, it isn't.

Consider the scads of them out there in the
education world alone. Teachers and students don't necessarily run
out and spend a grand for a new computer, or half a grand to upgrade
a rev. A. And there's no compelling reason to do so yet.

Well, I would certainly say that the advantages of OS X *are* compelling -- more than compelling, frankly -- but if you're productively using a machine that can't run it, or you can't yet afford the total cost of upgrading (updating third-party software as well as the OS itself), then it's fine to stay on OS 9 until you get your next computer. I know some people might say that's nuts, but Mac users (oddly enough) tend to get comfy with a machine and OS setup and become resistant to change.

While I think OS X is *such* an improvement on *any* OS that's come before it in terms of general computing that everyone who can should definitely take the plunge, there are some people who legitimately have to wait and I see no reason to "flame" or ridicule those people.
