When I started up my computer today, I had a message come up in several languages telling me to restart my computer. I'm running 10.3. What's happening?
That's called a "kernel panic" and it means your OS X system is messed up. Here is what to do.
Step 1. Boot from your original OS X CD. Instead of following the installer, however, look at the menu bar and select "run Disk Utility." Try repairing the drive and repairing permissions on the hard drive.
If that doesn't work ...
Step 2. Boot up holding the "s" key on your keyboard. You'll get a DOS-like screen of text/gibberish and eventually a command prompt. type the following command:
fsck -f
and hit enter. If you get a message that the disk appears to be OK, then type:
reboot
If you get a message that changes were made to the disk, run the fsck command again until you get the OK message.
If that doesn't work:
Step 3. Buy a copy of DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro (available from most Apple Retail Stores or CompUSAs, as well as online) and boot from that CD.
If that doesn't work:
Step 4. Attach a firewire cord from your Mac to another Mac. Boot up your Mac holding down the T key. The drive will show up on the "good" Mac and you can back up your stuff. Then:
Step 5. Take the machine to a certified Apple Repair Specialist.
