Then when I try to cancel, iTunes just spins the
beach ball of death and I have to force quit.

Import as mp3 or using the Apple loss-less encoder?

Why should that make any difference ? Will iTunes not crash then ?!?

If one want it in AAC @ 192kbps what should one do,
encode it @ 256 or 320kbps MP3 ?

Because it was said that the problem happened when it was imported USING the AAC encoder. Trying a different encoder is called "troubleshooting". When you have a problem and are trying to fix it, you try to isolate the cause of the trouble. In this case, using different encoders will rule out a freak problem with the AAC encoder.

Besides, why limit yourself to Apple's DRM version of AAC? You can't even play Apple AAC encoded music on all versions of iTunes; but are limited to only iTunes 4, IIRC. If I want to listen to music on an older version, I have to use mp3 encoded music. My SuperMac C500 can't use iT4; only iT2 for example.
