I am trying to get a DVD drive to work in my son's 500 Mhz Blue
Dalmatian iMac that is running Panther. Since it has a slot loading CD
burner, I bought a external USB 2.0 drive enclosure. I put the DVD
drive that I pulled from my Gigabit G4/400 in the enclosure and started
it up. When I inserted a DVD into the drive, the title of the disk
came up on the desktop. However, when the Apple DVD Player started, I
kept getting an error message saying "No valid DVD drive found". The
set up works for other kinds of disks like Music and game disks. It is
just the DVD Player app I am having trouble with. Everything shows up
properly in ASP. Is there a way to get this set up to work?

There are SEVERAL problems here:

1. Your Dalmation iMac doesn't have USB 2.0. It has USB 1.1. This is *far* too slow to play DVD movies. I really don't know what you were thinking imagining this could work.

2. Since your computer didn't come with a DVD originally installed, your system lacks the components needed to play DVD movies. You have the app, but not the infrastructure, in a manner of speaking. Nor is adding those components (even if you could somehow) going to help. Your computer is seeing and using the drive as a CD-ROM drive operating at a low speed. I'm mildly surprised to hear that even THAT much works properly.

3. The problem here has nothing to do with Panther, and everything to do with the hardware (ie no USB2, no APIs for a DVD player on that machine).
