Tim,

I don't know of any official recommendations from Apple before or after
updating Mac OS X, but MacFixIt has a procedure that they say will lead to
fewer or even zero problems. Their advice is as follows:

'As usual, we recommend the following procedure when applying a system Update:

'1. Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X
Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a
third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
'2. When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's
Repair Disk Permissions function.
'3. Install the update.
'4. After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.

'We've found that using this update procedure avoids many of the common
problems reported by readers after each update to OS X.

'One MacFixIt reader's experience emphasizes the importance of following
our recommended incremental Mac OS X upgrade procedure:

'"I updated (to Mac OS X 10.3.5) without repairing disc permissions and I
had problems emailing large files on Entourage - the program simply quit.
Safari spontaneously quit as well when downloading anything. Word quit when
opening existing documents. So on repairing permissions it has sorted
itself out. Even so I do still get occasional programs quitting but only
very occasionally . So your advice is not spurious its absolutely necessary
in my opinion!"'

All this comes from

My personal experience with MacFixIt's procedure has been good on the two
occasions that I used it.
