I am using Panther Mail with a preview pane. More than one user logs into the
same account and wondered if there is a way of only marking an email as read if
it is opened rather than previewed.

In Outlook this is possible but I cant find anything in Mail prefences.

I don't think it's possible using Mail interface, at least I failed to find it. Maybe some Applescript will do the trick?

Anyway, what you might consider is adding Mark Read/Unread and Flagged to the toolbar. Maybe it'll make your life just a tiny bit easier if you have to Mark emails manually, and the big blue ball definitely looks nice. :) It might sound very simple, but it tooked me weeks to realize it's possible!
