Yikes! This is not good news! This means my HD is about to go down. This is not the original hard drive, either. I replaced that a couple of years ago. It seems to me that this computer, when functioning "normally" makes a quiet whirring sound, which it no longer makes. I guess I just assumed that it was a fan. I tried taking the iMac apart back when the hard drive was replaced, but didn't get far. This is very frustrating as I fancy myself as a "hands on" Mac guy. Fortunately, several of you good folks have emailed me the take apart manuals, so I should, hopefully, be able to go in and replace the hard drive. Any suggestions for a reliable brand? I guess I'll go into the Apple System Profiler and find out what brand that I've got in there now (so I can avoid it!). Would it not make sense to add a fan? Is there no space, power plugs, etc?
There's really no need. That series of iMac will function very nicely without one. Stay away from 10,000 rpm drives, Some people favor using only the slower 5,400 rpm drives in fanless iMacs, but there are lots of people who have used the run of the mill, 7200 rpm drives without problems. When we replaced the OEM 10 GB drive in our slot loader I just chose and 80 GB, 7200 rpm, standard ATA unit on sale. It's still running fine 4 years later.

Since the 400DV has FireWire, one good option is to pickup an external FW drive. Clone your stuff to it, and you'll always have a backed up system if the iMac HD finally dies.
