You can't boot from a a usb drive. You need a firewire drive to do that.

I have been able to install Linux on the usb drive, however, when I select it with "startup disk" control panel, at reboot it says I need an updated installer. This is an iMac 350mhz slot-loading. the usb drive is the original 6Gb Maxtor in a creative i/o case with USB V1.1
