You can't boot from a a usb drive. You need a firewire drive to do that.
You can boot from a USB drive, I've done it but only with OS 9.2, OS X wouldn't boot. This was on a Indigo slot loading 350MHz non-firewire iMac. Technically the drive is both firewire and USB.

Check the Get Info for the drive and make sure it's Format is Mac OS, Extended or Standard. If it got formatted for Linux it may not be.
